Lash Extensions FAQ
What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are not to be confused with strip lashes “or cluster lashes”. The eyelash extensions we apply at Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar are individual, semi-permanent, matte black synthetic lashes that are applied to your natural lashes to make them look longer, fuller and thicker.
What do they look like?
The lash extensions look like natural lashes but come in different lengths, thicknesses, curls and even colors! We can achieve a natural look or a more dramatic look- whichever you prefer, by changing those factors and/or by scheduling different set appointments.
How do they feel?
The lashes are weightless! They should feel very comfortable and natural.
How are the lashes applied?
The lashes are applied one lash at a time in a Classic set, or one fan at a time in a Volume set. We isolate one natural eyelash and then adhere the fan or lash extension to the base of the natural lash by using a special bonding adhesive made exclusively for eyelash extensions. This is done approximately 1mm from the eyelid so neither the lash or the adhesive has contact with your skin. Again, the lashes are NOT applied to your skin-just your eyelash hair.
Do they hurt?
NO. When properly applied you should not feel them at all. They are lightweight and feel totally natural.
How long do they last?
Indefinitely with Touch-Up appointments. Natural lashes are constantly shedding (typically between 21-90 days) and new ones are growing in their place. Extensions will fall out along with your natural lash when it’s at the end of its growth stage. As the new ones come in, they will need to have extensions attached in order to maintain fullness.
Can I get the lashes for a one-time occasion?
Yes, we absolutely recommended lash extensions for special events such as reunions, weddings, honeymoons, vacations, proms, formals, photoshoots, etc.
If I want to keep them, what is the maintenance?
The extension will shed with your natural lash that it is attached to. Growth and shedding cycles are inconsistent and random (it is common to shed anywhere between 3-5 lashes per day) so to maintain your new look, we recommend scheduling a “Fill” every 2-3 weeks.
How do I know if I am ready for a Fill?
You will know when about 30-40% of your lash extensions have fallen out. As a consumer, this is sometimes difficult to gauge, so we recommend scheduling your Fill appointment weeks in advance.
Are eyelash extensions suitable for everyone?
Anyone of any age (women AND men) can have eyelash extensions as long as there is a healthy natural lash to adhere the extension onto. Our trained professionals can tell you if your natural lashes are eligible. If you are under the age of 18, your parent must accompany you to the appointment and sign a consent form for you.
Why wouldn’t my eyelashes be “eligible” for extensions?
Some lashes could be too weak, too thin. If you are unsure, call us to book a free consultation anytime.
Can I get extensions if I rub my eyes?
If you have a habit of rubbing your eyes, eyelash extensions may not be for you. We want you to avoid rubbing or tugging at your eyes-you do not want to pull out your extensions as it may take your natural lash with it.
How do I take care of them?
It may seem like a lot to remember, but eyelash extensions are very easy to take care of. Oil will break down the bond of the adhesive as it is considered a surface bond inhibitor and may cause premature loss of the extension. You want to make sure there is no oil in anything you use near your eyes. (foundation, eye creams, makeup, etc.) Never pull on them. CLEANSE YOUR LASHES 3-4 TIMES A WEEK. Avoid sauna or hot steam. Use only water-based makeup remover which we have available in our studio for purchase. Do not rub your eyes. Do not use a mechanical eyelash curler. Do not sleep on your face. When shampooing or conditioning, do not allow these products to run over your eyes. Meraki will send you home with a home care kit and instructions so you do not have to remember all these “do’s and don’t’s”.
Do I need to use any special products on my eyelash extensions?
Ask your Lash Artist what products they recommend!
What can I expect during my appointment?
While you relax, our licensed, certified lash artist performs the delicate task of attaching one lash at a time. In fact, most clients fall asleep! We play relaxing music but feel free to bring your headphones for music or an audiobook.
Can I wear mascara?
We ask that you do not. One advantage of having lash extensions is not needing mascara. Ditch the mascara-you really do not need it! If you ABSOLUTELY have to wear mascara on your bottom lashes, we ask that you avoid using waterproof or oil-based products. The extensions do better when you do not use mascara, even when applied only to the bottom it can transfer to your top lashes and therefore to your extensions.
Can I swim, shower, exercise, or visit a spa while wearing lashes?
Yes, if these activities are not done excessively. Our lash adhesive allows you to shower, swim, exercise, sleep and spa while wearing extensions. You can enjoy your lash extensions with little need to adjust your lifestyle. Please do not swim or spa (even steam from your shower) for 24 hours after your lash procedure to allow the bonding agent to fully cure. The main thing to remember with these activities is that you just want to make sure the extensions are not excessively exposed to heat and moisture.
Can I go tanning?
It is not recommended, however, some of our clients have told us they have gone tanning without any issues. You want to make sure the eyelash extensions are not excessively exposed to heat, so if you do go, please do not go for long lengths of time and protect your lashes.
How do I take them off?
You can either let them grow out or have them professionally removed by a trained artist. Please do not attempt to remove them yourself-we have lash extension remover which will avoid causing damage to your natural lashes from DIY removal.
Can I use an eyelash curler?
No, throw your eyelash curler out! Eyelash curlers may pull not only your lash extensions but also your own lashes. Remember, our lash extensions are ALREADY curled!
Are the Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar professionals licensed?
Yes, all artists at Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar are licensed Cosmetologists or Estheticians.
Are Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar professionals certified?
Yes. They are all certified and highly trained.
Why is the procedure so expensive?
Applying eyelash extensions is a very intricate, delicate procedure not to be taken lightly. Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar technicians are highly trained and only use the best products on the market today. Meraki Lash and Beauty Bar doesn’t cut corners to compromise quality.
How do I prepare for my appointment?
1. Be sure to have all makeup removed from the eye area. The more time we spend doing this for you, the less time we have to apply lashes!
2. Do not drink caffeine 60 minutes before your appointment. This can make your lashes flutter which makes it difficult to apply lashes and can even cause irritation.
3. Please put your cell phone on vibrate or silent.
4. If you would like, bring your music/podcasts to listen to.
5. You may want to visit the ladies' room beforehand.
